Modern Durham

Up in the gallery of the Museum, you can see displays about the 20th century. They include objects from the war years and post-war proposed developments in the City.

On the left is a photograph of a banner. It belonged to the Durham Branch of the 'Old Contemptibles' - the British Expeditionary Force sent to the Western Front at the outbreak of the First World War.

The banner, which was originally laid up in the Cathedral in 1951, can now be seen in the Museum.

Our collections include a range of items from the war years, including both the First World War and the Second World War.

On the left you can see a photo of part of our display of Second World War memorabilia.

Many properties in the City were demolished to make way for new road developments.

On display, you can see the salvaged sign from the old Royal Hotel which is one of the buildings that disappeared.
