Special Exhibition: How Historic Durham Survived the 20th Century

This new exhibition shows how Durham faced extensive demolition and redevelopment in the 20th Century, and the campaigns led by the Durham Preservation Society from 1942 to protect the historic buildings and green spaces of the city.

On display is Thomas Sharp’s plaster model of Durham City made in 1945 (see below) which shows the scale of proposed redevelopment.

The exhibition celebrates the work of The City of Durham Trust which was founded as the Durham Preservation Society in 1942.

The exhibition opens on 17 June 2022 and will remain on display until summer 2023.
